Gulang County’s educational actuality
Ill home economic condition causes great problem with students’ going to school. Every term quite a lot of students leave school. The state of girls’ going to school is even worse. Going to junior school is a problem, not to say to go to senior school. The yearly tuition fees of junior school are about 600-700 yuan, while it needs twice the amount to go to senior school. Many children choose to go to technical secondary school when they finish junior school. Actually the way out of technical secondary school has already been very bad and the tuition is quite high. Students of Huangyangchuan have to go to Gulang County in order to go to senior school.
Now the whole village of Huangyangchuan has two junior schools in all. They are Huangyangchuan Village Middle School and Huangyangchuan Vocational Middle School respectively, all of which are located in Huangyangchuan village government seat, Zhanngjiadun. Huangyangchuan Vocational Middle School where I teach once had vocational technology courses, such as sewing, farming technology and etc., and had senior school. But none of these exists now. It is just an ordinary school. There are in all about 300 teachers, most of whom are advanced professional school graduates and a few reach undergraduate level. Only some teachers are primary professional school graduates, all of whom are local people of Gulang County. The school opens all the courses of common middle schools. But due to bad condition and concepts, subsidiary subject lessons such as music, art, biology, history and geography, among which only art has specialized teachers, are all taught by other subjects’ teachers as a substitution, being attached no importance to completely. The teaching quality of main subjects is comparatively good in the county.
Educational equipment of the school comparatively drops behind. But for the present more than 30 computers are equipped. Except that 10 of them were bought by school in manner of installment, the rest are all endowed by Tianjin Yingyeda Company. Now the number of students has reached more than 600. So the time for practice on computers is comparatively strained. Frequent power outage affects teaching, too.
Students live comparatively dispersively. Some depend on walking along mountain path to attend school entirely, which takes them 2 to 3 hours everyday. Half of the students eat and live in school. The condition is not good. Students are able to drink hot water only during dining time or go to teachers’ room to ask for water. The accommodation is not bad in summer. But in winter not only people living in school are more but also it is very cold, one little camp stove doesn’t make any difference at all. Students in every dormitory sleep on two double common beds. Every dormitory has to accommodate more than 30 people, which makes them unable to turn while sleeping. Classrooms are also extremely cold in winter. Although fire is made in the stove, it doesn’t help much. Many students always have their hands chapped in winter and even frozen injury. In such an environment they have to study hard all the same, getting up at a time past 5 everyday morning and sleep at about 11 or 12. In winter because of the bad living condition, falling ill is a quite common thing, affecting their study severely.
What affects their study itself also includes their unsubstantial elementary education. Because a lot of elementary educational level is not high and the teacher making is comparatively low, and it is village-run elementary school that many a student has gone to with the result of comparative poor educational basis, their junior school study is affected greatly. Not a few remote places also have to substitute lessons by teachers in community school. Although the government has abolished teachers in community school, in such an impersonal actuality it is impossible. Students’ family circumstances also influence their study directly. As a result of poor family circumstances and limitation of the condition, they are restricted from contacting many things from childhood, able to read few books and not wide in their knowledge, thought and view. In addition, ill home economic condition often makes them confront the possibility of dropping out of school. If a family has many children, it is more needful for somebody to sacrifice. And those who sacrifice are always girls. In the concept of many parents, going to school for girls are not taken much count of. So long as they don’t go to school any longer, they are very difficult getting the second chance to entering school’s gate once more. They have to go back home to farm or work outside although they are only 15-year-old children. But most of the children extremely value their chances to go to school. They are all eager to change their fate and their family’s fate through studying.
With regard to Project Hope, as much as I know, only one child that goes to school has ever got the help of Project Hope donation with every term 50 yuan. Under the name of compulsory education, although the tuition of every term is only 10 yuan, the incidental expenses, including books fee, accommodation fee and practice-on-computer fee, are about 200 yuan and it has increased now. Even though it is several hundred yuan, it is difficult for many families to deal with. If one family has several students, the situation is much worse.
Ill home economic condition causes great problem with students’ going to school. Every term quite a lot of students leave school. The state of girls’ going to school is even worse. Going to junior school is a problem, not to say going to senior school. The yearly tuition fees of junior school are about 600-700 yuan, while it needs twice the amount to go to senior school. Many children choose to go to technical secondary school when they finish junior school. Thus they hope to work early to alleviate family burden. A lot of students that are excellent in study, because of the limited family condition, have to choose to go to technical secondary school instead whose way out has already been little and whose tuition is quite high, about 3000-4000 yuan every year. This is undoubtedly an often unbearable enormous burden for a peasant family that is already poverty-stricken. At present, students that choose to go to high school are more and more. Students of Huangyangchuan have to go to Gulang County to go to senior school. All Gulang County has five senior schools. Thereof students of Huangyangchuan generally go to Gulang No.1 Middle School which is near. For going to school in county, not only the study expenses increase greatly but also the living expenses such as eating, accommodation and etc. greatly increase, too.
The donating activity initiated by SICKBABY website has already helped 11 students, 6 of whom are junior students and 5 of whom are senior students. The books that are donated by SICKBABY website have reached more than 2000 copies. We hope that this thing can receive everybody’s material, substantial, direct help. We will try to fulfill the effect on actual people.
